Pyometra
A pyometra is a life threatening uterine infection of cats and dogs. The recommended treatment is ovariohysterectomy as soon as the patient is able to tolerate anaesthesia. In some cases she may already be suffering from kidney failure as a result of the toxins released from her uterus.

Cat Pyometra
$1000-1600 +/- abdominal imaging and ongoing ICU care after surgery

Dog Pyometra
$1600-2900 (some variation for size) +/- abdominal imaging and ongoing ICU care after surgery

Laparotomy
This is when we open and explore the abdomen to remove foreign objects (gastrotomy/ enterotomy/ enterectomy) or identify problems such as cancers in the area (exploratory). Often we take biopsy samples for the lab so we can obtain a definitive diagnosis. This procedure also allows us to remove bladder stones (cystotomy), correct a twisted stomach (GDV) and remove some masses (eg splenectomy). Some of these patients are in critical condition and require intensive management to maximise their chance of survival.
